Halloween Greeting Card

A trend-defining Downey project: skull print note cards combining metallic black and silver foil blocking, multi-level embossing, debossing and duplexing. This one created a buzz amongst our clients and led to the production of many similar style luxury projects. Read on to see how we created this macabre masterpiece.

Client

This halloween greeting card was made as a Downey original to send to our clients in preparation for spooky season. With inspiration taken from Damien Hurst’s iconic diamond skull ‘For the Love of God’ - we sought to create something that was equally as powerful and stunningly ghoulish.

The Brief

For this project, created in 2014, we wanted to push the boundaries, and expand on what we could do as a luxury printing house. The process of multi-level embossing used in this greeting card has transpired to be one of our most revered techniques -  and one that solidified our status as an industry pioneer.

The Process

To create this wicked greeting card - we went through a thorough research and development process. At Downey, we are known for our thought leadership, and our work from our invitations to our packaging to our brochures  demonstrates our commitment to show stopping work. However, these cutting edge designs are only achieved through years of honing our craft, and allowing room for trial and error.

For this greeting card, stage one involved applying black metallic foil onto a black card. Using black-on-black created a sophisticated base, setting the tone for the high-contrast elements that would follow. The next step featured the iconic silhouette of a skull, rendered in striking silver foil. The contrast between the black card and the silver foil made the skull design pop, catching the eye immediately. For stage three- a debossed frame was pressed into the black card. This subtle yet impactful detail framed the invitation, giving it structure and depth. The final stage was all about texture and detail. Embossing was used to add intricate textures and shades around the skull. This brought a three-dimensional depth and luxurious tactile experience to the invitation, making the design come alive.

The Result

These combined techniques culminated in a Halloween card that was captivating and boundary-pushing - perfectly reflecting Downey's commitment to excellence and creativity in luxury printing.
