Dom Perignon Invitations

We were commissioned by Dom Pérignon to create this bespoke invitation card using an original artwork showing a cut metal and glass background. We recreated this effect by using a range of foil layers along with a complex multi-level embossing to create the sharp angle and light reflection.

The Client

Dom Pérignon is one of the most iconic names in the champagne industry. Part of the LVMH group, this brand of vintage champagne was first introduced in 1921. It has an impressive history, having been chosen for major events like the 2,500-year celebration of the Persian Empire and the wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles. All in all, this is one of the most well known and luxurious brands of champagne in the world - meaning that any of their print designs would need to be of the same standard.

The Brief

In 2017 the client came to us in search of unique invitations, which would be sent out to a select group of clientele in order to celebrate their 2009 vintage. Such a momentous occasion deserved a momentous invitation - and our team were up for the challenge.

The Process

The process of completing these 100 invitations took about a month. Dom Pérignon has strict branding guidelines - black and gold are their key components, and we needed to keep their colour scheme in mind throughout the design process. We were also aware that every year they commission a creative to represent and reimagine their brand in a different way or style - in 2017, they showed a bottle of their champagne against an image of broken glass.

Our designers conferred with one another and came up against a few challenges. They knew they wanted to create invitations that had the same feel as the broken glass design - but how do you create a visual of mirror and glass that mimics it while using only the colours black and gold?

The Result

As always, we were able to come up with a creative, innovative, beautiful and useful final design that our client loved.

They used black metallic foil with multi-level embossing to create an image of broken glass, with a golden shield in the middle showing off the Dom Pérignon logo. This invitation is a bit of an optical illusion, with the shield looking as though it is rising from the background when you hold it right in front of you - when, in reality, it is actually the lowest point.

The card was stamped into, giving it a jagged effect, and the black foil catches the light just as broken glass would. All these details make it look 3D and are incredibly difficult to achieve - our production team had to use exact precision and pressure when creating these sharp lines; too much would cause the foil to break and cut the card.

We especially love this gold foil invitation as it’s not typical for a luxury brand - it’s unique, risque, creative and modern, all while staying on brand and seamlessly incorporating the vision and imagery the client had. We see this project as a piece of art in its own right - a project that suits Dom Pérignon to a T.

This invite stands out from the crowd and shows what you can do with traditional printing - with the right imagery and idea, you can create something truly amazing.
